Generic Zyloprim (Allopurinol)

Allopurinol is a drug that is used to treat gout. It can also be used to treat some conditions associated with kidney stones. This medicine works by lowering the amount of uric acid produced by the body. Increased levels of uric acid is the reason behind kidney problems and gout. You can also use this drug to treat high amounts of uric acid in patients undergoing cancer treatment. 

 

Take this medication as prescribed by your doctor. This drug is taken orally. You can take Allopurinol with or without food. It is advisable to take it after a meal to minimize stomach pain. The maximum dose is 300 milligrams per day. Drink plenty of fluids when using Allopurinol at least eight glasses or more in a day. Your doctor will also advice you to avoid taking a lot vitamins especially Vitamin C. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. 

 

Take this medicine regularly to get the most benefit from it. Remember to use it the same time each day. If you are treating gout, treatment may take several weeks before the medication takes effect. You may experience increased gout attacks when you start taking the medicine. What's more is that your body might discharge a lot of uric acid. Also, continue to take pain killers when using Allopurinol. Some of the painkillers you may use include: ibuprofen and colchicine. 

 

This medication has the following side effects: nausea, stomach pain and diarrhea. Serious side effects of Allopurinol include: sore throat, yellowing of the skin, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision, kidney problems, unusual tiredness, eye pain, fever and itching. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience these side effects. 

 

Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if:

• You have liver or kidney disease

• You have diabetes

• You have high blood pressure 

• You are pregnant

• You are taking alcohol
