Description

Cabergoline

Cabergoline ia a dopamine receptor agonist and is used to treat hyperprolactinemia. This is a condition characterized by an excess of prolactin in blood. The drug works by reducing the prolactin hormone in the pituitary gland. Dostinex is also referred to as Cabergoline.

Dosage

Cabergoline is taken in doses of 0.5 mg. It is a tablet that is administered orally.

Usage

Cabergoline is taken for a period of six months or more. It should be taken two times weekly during this period. Only take the drug more than twice if advised by your physician. Follow doctor’s instructions when taking this drug.

Side effects

Cabergoline can sometimes cause side effects. The major side effects could include;

  • weakness or tiredness, loss of appetite
  • serious loss of weight and lack of appetite
  • passing out
  • pain on your lower back
  • swollen feet or ankles
  • irregular breathing when tired
  • coughing and discomfort in the chest
  • Irregular urination, very little.

There are less serious effects of the drug such as;

  • vomiting and nausea
  • mood swings and headaches
  • dizzy spells
  • feeling sleepy and anxious
  • feeling numb
  • dryness in the mouth
  • Stomach aches.

Precautions

Cabergoline should only be used under the instructions of a physician. A blood test must be administered before and after use of this drug. This drug should not be used by people with allergies to cabergoline and the following conditions;

  • liver disease
  • coronary disease
  • Hypertension
  •  preeclampsia and eclampsia
  • Allergies to the following; dihydroergotamine, ergonovine Ergomar, Cafergot, Migergot, and Methergine.

Breast feeding women should also avoid taking this drug. Cabergoline should be stored in a dry and cool place.
