Generic Sustiva (Efavirenz)

Efavirenz is a type of medication that is used to control HIV infection in blood. It is combined with other drugs to reduce HIV levels in your body. As a result, there are minimal chances of you contacting HIV complications such as cancer. This medication belongs to the non-nucleoside class of drugs. When using this drug, make sure you practise safe sex by using latex condoms, continue to take all HIV drugs as directed by your doctor  and avoid sharing sharp objects and personal items. 

 

Take Efavirenz as directed by your physician. Read the Medication Guide carefully. If you have any questions, ask your pharmacist or doctor for clarification. This medication is taken with or without food. You can take it once daily before going to bed. If you take it with food, this may increase the risk to side effects. Swallow the capsule whole with water. In some cases, you might have difficulties swallowing the capsule. You can open it and mix the contents with light food such as applesauce. Follow this up with two teaspoons of food. Consume the mixture within 30 minutes. Avoid taking meals after 2 hours of consuming the medication. You can also make a solution for infants. Here, you are advised to use infant formula to get the best dose. This dose is administered based on your medical condition and response to treatment.  In children, it is given based on the child's weight. 

 

Do not skip doses or reduce or increase the same. If you do this, chance are the virus will multiply leading to worse side effects. Take the medication the same time every day. 

 

Efavirenz has these side effects: drowsiness, trouble sleeping, nightmares, headache, diarrhea unusual tiredness, joint pain, weight loss, blurred vision, skin sores, uneven heartbeat, development of goiter, drooping face, slurred speech and trouble breathing.  

 

Inform your doctor if you have the following before using Efavirenz. If you have:

• Hepatitis C

• Liver disease

• Seizures

• Allergies using the drug

• Any other drugs
