Generic Singulair (Montelukast Sodium)

Singulair is used to control and prevent asthma. This medication belongs to the leukoteriene receptor antagonists class of drugs. This medicine works by obstructing leukotrienes, substances that lead to the narrowing and inflammation of the lungs.  This prevents severe asthma attacks in your airways during day and night. Singulair is also used to treat hay fever (rhinitis) and its symptoms.  This medication is available in three forms of tablets.  These are: a 4mg and 5mg pink chewable tablets and a 10mg round tablet that is beige in color.  

 

Take this medication as directed by your doctor. Teenagers who are aged 15 years old can take a 10mg tablet daily. This prescription also applies to adults. Children aged between two to five years old are give a 4mg tablet dose every day. Those aged between six to fourteen years are given a 5mg dose of Singulair daily. Asthmatic patients are advised to take this medication once a day in the evening. 

 

Read the Medication Guide given by your doctor. If you don't understand these instructions, ask your physician or doctor to help out. Singulair can be taken with water especially the 10mg tablet dose. The 4mg and 5mg dose of Singulair can be chewed by young children. Chew this medication thoroughly. Avoid swallowing it whole. Keep Singulair in a dry and cool place. Also keep it away from children. 

 

Some of the side effects caused by Singulair include: diarrhea, nausea, joint pain, nerve complications, nose bleed, headache, drowsiness, unusual tiredness, muscle cramps, sleep walking, depression, memory lapse, anxiety, hallucinations and tremor.
