Generic Tofranil (Imipramine)

Tofranil is used to treat depression. This medication belongs to the tricyclic antidepressants class of drugs. It works by restoring a balance of neurotransmitters in the brain. When combined with other medications, this drug is used to treat enuresis(bed wetting in children). Here this medicine works by blocking acetylcholine on the bladder. Imipramine (Tofranil) treats depression helping you get a better sleep and improve your mood. This drug can also be used to treat other health problems such as panic disorders not stated here. 

 

Read the Medication Guide carefully before taking Tofranil. Take this medication orally with or without food. It is taken one or four times a day. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to  treatment. In children the dose is based on weight. If you experience drowsiness, your doctor may recommend that you take the medication at night. He or she may start you at a low dose and with time increase it to enjoy the most of Tofranil. Children should take this medicine an hour before sleeping. 

 

Follow your doctor's instructions when using this medication. Also, use Tofranil frequently to get the best of it. Do not increase or reduce the medication than what is prescribed as this will increase the risk of side effects. To help you remember, use this medicine the same time each day. It may take up to three weeks before this medication takes effect especially if you are using it to treat depression. Do not stop the medication even when you feel well. If you detect side effects from using this drug, contact your doctor at once. If also, you have a child who is taking this medication, contact your doctor to know when the right  time comes for you to discontinue the medication. 

 

The side effects of Tofranil are: blurred vision, dizziness, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, weight loss or gain, increased sweating and constipation. If you experience this, inform your doctor immediately for help. 

 

Before taking Tofranil, tell your doctor if:

• You have heart problems

• You have kidney or liver problems

• You have asthma

• You suffer from convulsions and seizures

• You have trouble urinating
