Generic Risperdal (Risperidone)

Risperidone is used to treat mental disorders such as the bipolar and schizophrenia disorders. This medicine belongs to the antipsychotics class of drugs. It works by restoring the balance of natural chemicals in the brain. Risperidone is also used to treat autistic disorders. When combined with other drugs, it can treat depression. You are allowed to use this medication for other purposes not listed here. However, you must ensure you get medical advice. 

 

This medication is taken orally. You can take it with or without food as prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication once or twice a day. Risperidone is also found in a liquid form. If you are using this solution, use a special measuring device to get the correct dose. You can take this solution with various drinks such as low-fat milk, juice, tea and water. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Your doctor may advise you to start Risperidone with small doses to reduce the risk of getting side effects. Take Risperidone the same time each day.

Do not stop the medication even when you feel well.  Instead, make sure you consult your doctor when you feel the urge to stop. 

 

Risperidone has the following side effects: weight gain, dizziness, nausea, drooling and drowsiness. If you feel dizzy, stand up slowly from your chair to avoid falling. Serious side effects include: anxiety, depression, sore throat, fever, difficulty breathing,  shaking, increased blood pressure and swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth and face.
